Requirements for the base for polyurethane sealant

  • The base must be clean, dry, homogeneous, must not contain oils, greases, loose and crumbling particles;

  • Cement milk should be removed.

Preparation of the base / Primer for polyurethane sealant

  • SikaflexPRO-3  has good adhesion to a clean and strong base;

  • For optimal adhesion in critical operating conditions, for example, outdoors or under high pressure, seams must be thoroughly cleaned and primed with special primers

  • If there are doubts about the quality of the connections, preliminary tests are first carried out.

Non-porous bases

  • Enameled ceramics, aluminum, anodized aluminum, stainless steel and galvanized steel, powder coatings, etc., must be cleaned with a fine abrasive and Sika Aktivator-205 (SikaCleaner-205) and a clean towel / clean cloth, and after drying (at least 15 minutes), apply sealant;

  • All other metal surfaces, not mentioned above, are cleaned with the help of a fine abrasive and Sika Aktivator-205 (SikaCleaner-205) and a clean towel / clean cloth, after drying (at least 15 minutes), apply the primer SikaPrimer- 3N;

  • Before laying the sealant, wait for drying time (min. - 30 minutes, max. - 8 hours);

  • With rigid PVC, use SikaPrimer-215.

  • Before laying the sealant, wait for the primer to dry (min. - 30 minutes, max. - 8 hours).

Porous bases

  • For example, concrete, porous concrete and construction mortar, brick should be primed with SikaPrimer-3 N using a brush or brush;

  • Before laying the sealant, wait for the primer to dry (min. - 30 minutes, max. - 8 hours).

Important note

  • Primed bases only strengthen the adhesion of the sealant;

  • They do not replace surface cleaning and do not strengthen the base;

  • Primed bases improve the resource characteristics of the sealed seam;

  • Base temperature: +5°C min. / +40°C max;

  • Air temperature: +5°C min. / +40°C max;

  • Moisture of the base: Dry.

Method of application / Tools for polyurethane sealant

  • Sikaflex PRO-3 sealant is delivered ready to use;

  • After preparing the seam and the base, set the limiting cord to the required depth and make a primer if necessary;

  • Insert the cartridge into the gun, then squeeze the Sikaflex PRO-3 sealant  into the seam, ensuring tight contact of the material with the sides of the seam;

  • Fill the seam, avoiding the formation of air voids. When compacting and leveling , it is necessary to ensure tight adhesion of Sikaflex PRO-3 sealant  to the sides of the seam to obtain high adhesion;

  • In those cases, when it is necessary to get clear or exceptionally neat lines of the joint, use a protective tape;

  •  Remove the tape when the sealant is still soft;

  • Smooth the surface of the seam using a smoothing liquid until the perfect surface is obtained.

Cleaning tools

  • Clean all application tools and equipment with Sika Sealant Remover / Sika TopClean-T immediately after use;

  • Remove hardened (polymerized) material only by mechanical means.

Notes on application / Restrictions

  • Excessive coating of elastic sealants is not allowed.

  • The thickness of compatible coatings applied to seams should not exceed 1 mm;

  • Compatible coatings must be checked in accordance with DIN 52 452-2;

  • Under the influence of chemical preparations, high temperatures, and ultraviolet radiation, deviations in color are possible (especially shades of white);

  • At the same time, the change in color does not lead to a decrease in the technical characteristics or strength of the sealant;

  •  When using with natural stone, contact our technical service;

  • Do not use  Sikaflex® PRO- 3 with glass, on bituminous bases, with natural rubber, with rubber based on a copolymer of ethylene, propylene and diene monomer, with construction materials that can emit oils, plasticizers or solvents that can damage the sealant;

  • Do not use  Sikaflex PRO-3  in swimming pools;

  • Do not mix or apply on fresh  Sikaflex PRO-3, substances that can react with isocyanates, especially alcohol, which is often a component of solvents, solvents, cleaners and lubricants for formwork forms.

  • Such contact can stop the polymerization reaction of the material.

Remark

  • All technical data are given on the basis of laboratory tests.

  •  Real characteristics may vary for reasons beyond our control.
