Glossy ceramic floor tiles

Task

  1. It is necessary to apply a wear-resistant polymer coating on ceramic tiles.

  2. The customer wanted to keep the tile, since dismantling, leveling the surface with the necessary strength for a polymer coating increases the cost of the project.

  3. Chemical resistant floor covering, should be graphite, RAL 7024.

  4. The final polymer coating must be waterproof, durable, and resistant to pedestrian loads.

 Solution

To select an effective polymer floor covering, a test application of Greek industrial polyurethane paint Stancolac 5008, RAL 7024, without a primer, was made on a polished, dust-free surface of ceramic tiles.

Two coats of paint were applied, at a rate of 0.3 kg/m2.

After the polymerization of the polyurethane coating, three days later, a “home-made” wear test was performed by scratching the surface with a sharp object (key), as well as an adhesion test, using a spatula, for polymer paint.

The polyurethane coating was easily scratched, leaving deep marks.

The adhesion test showed good results.

The paint adhered well to polished matte tiles, and on the area without polishing, on a glossy surface, the coating was easily removed with a spatula.

Recommendation : sand ceramic tiles or use a quality adhesive primer.

Such a floor covering did not meet the requirements of the customer, so the experiments continued.

The existing polyurethane base was coated with a two-component American water-based protective varnish to protect Stonhard polymer coatings.

After the varnish had dried, the surface was scratched again. The result was negative, since the surface was easily subject to mechanical wear and did not look aesthetically pleasing, so this decision was also rejected.

The polyurethane coating turned out to be very soft, which in the future could lead to rapid wear of the floor surface after intense pedestrian loads, as well as moving furniture around the hall.

After many consultations with global manufacturers of polymer coatings, we decided to use the Finnish system Teknofloor 2K TM TEKNOS (Finland).

TEKNOFLOOR 2K is a water soluble, two-component epoxy paint that forms a glossy, hard, flexible and wear resistant surface.

TEKNOFLOOR 2K - paint for concrete floors. It can also be applied to damp walls in rooms and workshops, i.e. surfaces where the coating must be easy to clean, as well as be strong and dense.

This paint is also suitable for cement plaster surfaces, bricks and hard building boards.

It can be used in facilities such as saunas, toilets, basements, etc.

We decided not to apply the test area, there was little time left before the opening of the cafe. We trusted the physical and mechanical characteristics of the material, since epoxy is a much harder material than polyurethane.

To consolidate the effect on the wear resistance of the coating, if it does not perform well in operation, we have one more option left, this is to apply an anti-slip, transparent, matt, sealing polyurethane varnish PUR TOP M Plus from the German manufacturer Remmers to the epoxy floor coating.

Benefits of Remmers lacquer

  • Anti-slip properties.

  • 1 component product.

  • Matte coating.

  • UV resistant.

  • Resistant to mechanical stress.

  • Chemical resistance.

  • If necessary, it is possible to manufacture in a pigmented version.

This floor lacquer has shown good results in mechanical wear resistance.

Stages of work

Surface preparation

Grinding ceramic tiles

Sanding of ceramic tiles, to the level of dullness and removal of the glossy top layer.

Grinding of ceramic tiles was carried out manually, using a 125 mm grinder and a DGS-S 125/22.23 BETON UNI diamond cutter from the company Distar.

The diamond mill is presented in a classical form with a two-row diamond segment.

Such a tool is used for rough grinding of surfaces made of ordinary and reinforced concrete, concrete-mosaic surfaces and removing the influx of concrete after pouring the formwork.

The cutter has excellent high-speed grinding characteristics at a very affordable price.

This is the best solution for home use or small jobs.

The cutter has two rows of diamond segments mounted on a lightweight metal body.

It is used on manual angle grinders when grinding without cooling.

Manufactured in two outer diameters 100 and 125 mm with a bore of 22.2 mm.

Dedusting the surface of ceramic tiles

Cleaning and dust removal of the floor surface is carried out using an industrial vacuum cleaner.

Degreasing ceramic tiles

With the help of a solvent, ceramic tiles were cleaned from greasy stains, acrylic plaque, which was formed as a result of painting the ceiling and walls.

Wet cleaning and cleaning of ceramic tiles

Carried out washing of ceramic tiles with detergents.

The junctions were glued with a wide 50 mm masking tape.

Priming ceramic tiles

The primer was applied using a paint brush, velor rollers, with a pile height of 6 mm, a length of 100-180 mm.

A special adhesive primer FUTURA 3, TM Teknos (Finland) was used as a primer.

A general purpose alkyd primer that can also be used as primer, filler primer, adhesion primer and intermediate coat.

Scope of primer application

Primer FUTURA 3 is designed for priming indoor and outdoor surfaces, such as furniture, as well as chipboard, wood fiber and gypsum boards.

It is also suitable for priming metal surfaces.

(including surfaces made of light and galvanized metal), as well as glass, ceramic tiles, PVC plastics and surfaces painted with acid-curing paints in rooms.

Can also be used to paint ceilings.

Primer Benefits

  • Primer white, matte color.

  • It has a pleasant smell of toothpaste.

  • Comfortable working indoors.

  • Covers ceramic tiles well.

  • Creates a rough base.

  • Consumption: 0.075-0.1 kg/m2.

Primer Disadvantages

Not detected.

Application of Teknofloor 2K epoxy paint on ceramic tiles

A two-component epoxy paint was applied using a paint brush, velor rollers, with a pile height of 6 mm, a length of 100-180 mm.

The tiles were painted in two stages, in two layers, with an application interval of 24 hours between layers.

Advantages of epoxy two-component paint

  • Water-based paint, no solvent odor.

  • It is comfortable to work indoors, but with personal protective equipment.

  • Mixes 1:1 by volume with other ingredients, easy to make small batches without using a scale.

  • The time of work with paint depends on the temperature in the room, exposure to sunlight, from 30 minutes - 60 minutes.

  • It covers the white base well after priming.

Disadvantages of epoxy paint

Not detected, but we will observe the wear resistance during the operation of the facility.

In the end, with the right choice of Teknofloor 2K epoxy coating, the cafe received a durable and wear-resistant coating for its ceramic floors that meets the customer's requirements and is ready to withstand heavy foot traffic for a long time.
