A task

It is required to perform the install of a concrete terrace on the street, around the pool.

Carry out waterproofing of the concrete base.

Lay ceramic tiles, grout the seams and seal the joints around the perimeter.

Solution

The customer decided to use the materials of the Master Builders Solutions (Basf) system when constructing a concrete terrace.

Why use a concrete admixture when constructing a concrete terrace outdoors?

• MasterPozzolith 3094 is a water-reducing concrete admixture, a plasticizer based on modified lignosulfonate.

• Plasticizing admixture for concrete, increases the workability of the concrete mixture and the mechanical characteristics of concrete, as well as the rapid set of strength, at an early stage of concrete maturation, by reducing the water-cement ratio.

• Reduces the amount of water by at least 12% compared to concrete without additive.

• Provides a low W/C ratio and provides easy pumping with the same workability compared to concrete without additive.

• Provides high performance in concretes, with low cement dosage and allows to obtain stable concrete quality.

• Provides high strength, durability and high density, after curing, 28 days, with proper care of fresh concrete, due to the low water-cement ratio compared to concrete without additives.

• The concrete mix is ​​easy to place and the risk of segregation is reduced.

• When used together with low early strength cements, the early strength of the concrete is lower, but the final concrete strength values ​​are higher compared to concrete without additives.

The mechanical treatment of the concrete base was carried out, the removal of cement laitance and weak particles of concrete, using a grinder.

Repair of a concrete terrace

• With the help of MasterEmaco N 600 concrete repair mortar, we repaired sinks and small potholes on a concrete terrace.

• MasterEmaco N 600 is a ready-to-use material in the form of a polymer-modified dry mix based on cement and graded sand.

• When mixing a dry mix with water, a thixotropic, non-separating mortar is formed, which has high adhesion to concrete.

• MasterEmaco N 600 is a durable, aggressive material designed for finishing, restoring and protecting concrete surfaces.

• It is applied in layers from 5 to 30 mm thick.

Laying ceramic tiles on a concrete deck

Laying tiles is carried out on a waterproofing coating, using an elastic cement-based adhesive, for outdoor use.

MasterTile FLX 24 is a polymer-modified, cementitious, flexible tile adhesive with high stability and performance.

• Suitable for laying ceramic tiles, porcelain, granite, marble, natural stone, glass mosaics and pressed bricks.

• Complies with EN 12004-C2TES1 class.

• C2 = Cement based with improved additional features.

• T = reduced slip.

• E = increased machinability time.

• S1= elastic.

Scope of adhesive for tiles MasterTile FLX 24

• Adhesive for tiles mastertile, used for indoor and outdoor, on vertical and horizontal surfaces.

• For bonding ceramics, granite, marble, porcelain, natural stone, glass mosaics and pressed bricks on cement-based surfaces subject to rapid temperature changes.

• Tile adhesive, used for gluing ceramics, granite, marble, natural stone and glass mosaics on surfaces sensitive to temperature changes, such as: gypsum board, gypsum plaster, heat-insulating boards, aerated concrete, after applying MasterTile P 300 RC primer on them.

Grouting tile joints with elastic cement grout

For grouting joints on tiles, MasterTile FLX 555 cement elastic grout is used .

MasterTile FLX 555 is a decorative  tile grout, waterproof, ready-to-use grout for grouting joints of various widths,  all types of ceramic and faience tiles, porcelain and non-absorbent types of natural stone (marble, granite).

• MasterTile FLX 555 is a dry cementitious mixture, with polymer additives, which is ready to use and, when mixed with water, forms a plastic, homogeneous composition.

• Grout for tiles Master Tile FLX 555, has good adhesion to tiles in the joint area, without cracking (high adhesion).

Sealing the adjoining ceramic tiles to the wall

To prevent moisture ingress at the junctions, the junction of ceramic tiles and concrete board was sealed with MasterSeal NP 474 polyurethane sealant.

MasterSeal NP 474  is a ready-to-use, one-component, elastic, polyurethane, moisture-resistant sealant for joints in widths from 5 to 30 mm.

• MasterSeal NP 474 is supplied in 600 ml soft tubes. 

• Guaranteed shelf life of the material, in unopened, undamaged original packaging, is 12 months.

• Store the material in a cool, dry place, avoid freezing.

• The consumption  of MasterSeal NP 474  depends on the width of the joint and the depth of its filling.

• With a joint width of 10 mm and a filling depth of 10 mm, the consumption of MasterSeal NP 474  is 100 ml per linear meter of the joint, which allows sealing 6 linear meters with one tube.

• One-component, ease of application.

• Excellent adhesion to various substrates.

• High tensile strength (elastic).

• Ability to recover after deformation.

• High resistance to weathering and wear (weather resistance).

• Does not lose elasticity for a long time, even at temperatures from -30 to + 80°C.

The use of this system of materials, when constructing an open terrace, allows you to extend the life of the floor covering (ceramic tiles), without peeling and shooting.
